The FDA has released traceability guidelines that brings fantastic news for both businesses and consumers in the seafood industry. With compliance deadlines varying based on business size, it’s important to note that these guidelines are now in effect.

On 17 May the ECO Magazine in partnership with the IOC-UNESCO released a special issue on the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021 – 2030 (Ocean Decade).

Last week we officially launched the latest version of the Seafood Souq platform. We’re thrilled to have now scaled our platform to serve more customer segments in the F&B industry providing them with a tool to simplify procurement and source worldwide seafood products direct from the producer. Our new iteration of the platform is a complete suite of services and solutions for the seafood industry covering the value chain from harvest to table.

Fish & fish products are some of the most traded food items in the world today; with the UAE leading regional per capita seafood consumption at 24kg per year — 5kg higher than the global average.

I recently attended the EATDXB event, hosted by Bull & Roo that brought together foodies, independent restaurateurs, chefs and interested consumers — It was enlightening to see a movement like this in Dubai and witness such a passion for food being discussed by key players in the industry.

Years of learnings and nearly 12 months of dedicated work from a team passionate to improve the Seafood industry has brought us to this moment. The launch of Seafood Souq.

The Global Seafood Expo is the single largest seafood exposition held annually in Brussels, Belgium where the world’s most important seafood producers/exporters attend and exhibit their products, capabilities, innovations, brands and processes to their buyers, partners and distributors.

There’s an unfortunate reality occurring globally where seafood is treated as a simple commodity by business buyers and end consumers. The fault of this does not lie with any particular individual or group but is part of a larger issue with how the majority of seafood is bought and sold globally.

…It was early in Q1 2019, We had been developing our platform and processes for months on end and we were finally ready…it was the moment of truth, time to test a live order!

Hi there! My name’s Sophie and I recently joined the team at Seafood Souq as Market Research Manager. As a newcomer to the seafood industry (but a keen seafood consumer) my first two weeks were spent deep diving (pardon the pun) into researching all things aquaculture and I was honestly shocked.

At Seafood Souq we’ve created five pillars to ensure we stay true to what we originally set out to do, both internally and externally. We live and breathe these five pillars, they are the key ingredients that improve our ability to approach and revolutionise an industry.

Our company, Seafood Souq launched four months ago and we just held our first board meeting. Many of you reading this may think that it is strange that a company as young as ours is already implementing corporate governance practices, but we believe that it is core to our values as a startup.

As with the nature of our business model, traceability and transparency is of utmost importance to us, both in operations for customers buying on the platform (We’ll get to that in the next post) and also in how we run our company internally. It’s because of this ethos that we want our first post to be an introduction — Who the founding team are and how we all came together.
